Government - Help or Hindrance?

I commented on a FaceBook post by the Washington Post today, regarding Elizabeth Warren's speech the other evening, in Congress, about Citigroup. The WaPo article, complete with a diagram, said, "Elizabeth Warren was right: the links between government and Citigroup run deep." My comment was, "This is WHY our country is falling apart. We are in DESPERATE need of a savior, or two! Id like to see Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren reclaim the United States for it's citizens." I received a comment from Michael T., "The problem is, they're not saviors. They want you to believe it, but it's not true. Perhaps now would be a good time to assess why you think the federal government can be a savior to begin with. Hint: that's not their role to begin with." I know a Libertarian/Tea Party believer when they comment and I do my best to bite my tongue (with the exception of my commments on the Koch brothers) but, today, I couldn't let it go.

My response is as follows:

Really? What the hell are we paying them for, if not to be guardians of the citizens? Maybe we should disband ALL government then. We pay taxes to have clean water, safe roadways, education for children, housing that is safe, food that is safe. How are the roads where you live? How are the schools? We pay the Legislators to work for US! Not to sit in Washington, D.C. doing diddley-squat, take lengthy vacations constantly and they are not making things better for the citizens. If I pay someone to work for me, they'd better do so. If I pay for a product, it had better be something of value. Libertarians talk about no government interference, how'd you like disease running rampant, getting rid of government is getting rid of the CDC. Do you have the stomach to feed yourself and your family rancid meat and ecoli laced veggies? Getting rid of the government means bye-bye USDA. Are you prepared to travel on a completely broken down interstate highway, fly on planes where the pilot may have been tooting a little blow before starting the jet? How about rampant crime, idiots with guns killing someone you know just for looking at them or another moron bombing your place of employment or, your kids school. No government, no ATF. And, speaking of employment, do you count on having a safe working environment and not having to work in a sweatshop for slave wages. Yep, there goes OSHA. See, you guys think it's great to talk big about getting rid of government but the fact is, it's a very dangerous proposal because you cannot pick and choose. We either have government, or not, you choose. You live a much safer, prosperous life by pooling resources with your neighbors by paying taxes. Think about all that goes by the wayside when we get rid of government interference.
